Akaash Vani and Dil Dhadakne Do: Vaccine for a superfluous society

Movies that speak of outdated concepts such as "Happy Family, despite anything" must be banned: Hum Saath Saath Hai and Vivah and most importantly, Suraj Barjatiya, are the biggest culprits of this nonsensical drama which hold no truth. 

In the name of niceness, one cannot sacrifice personal peace and its pursuit. And if doing so is being bad then better to be bad and happy than being "nice" and "melancholic".

Instead, movies like Akaash Vani and Dil Dhadakne Do must be aired continuously till everyone watches it. Much like the Vaccine drive. And it should be driven into minds that life is not about keeping the family honour alive. Ironically, it is the meek and the mute (metaphorically) who are asked to do so.

So, moving on:




Dose 1: Akaash Vani is the story of a happy-go-lucky couple (Akaash and Vani) who are separated as Vani gets married to another man, her parents choose. She succumbs to the pressure as her parents are maligned by society. 

And why are they maligned? 

Vani's sister elopes with a man of her choice. And why did she elope? Because parents would never allow her to marry. 

You see, the whole cycle pin points to a self-righteous society. And who are these gatekeepers? No one knows. The secret is if you hush them up, in most cases, they will. 

So what happens to Akaash and Vani? I would recommend you to watch the film on Youtube. It speaks about important issues like marital rape, coercive relationships, abuse, and importance of love and self-partnership. 

Dose 2: Dil Dhadakne Do is the story of an affluent family celebrating an occasion on the cruise. Keeping the merriment aside, it delves deep into issues such as interference in children's lives. And no matter how much obedient we are towards our elders, boundaries are a must. Remember this scene? Ranveer Kapoor lashes out on his parents who lecture on morality when they hide their true thoughts under the carpet. 



The absence of boundaries causes disruption. Let us face it, as the world grows bigger, families are growing smaller. Would you want to live with someone who you despise? 

In the olden days, people were simpler and lives were easier and let us face it, as much as we cherish those times, we can never get back to it. We have to create our own happiness and with a partner who matches our personality. Haven't we seen enough unhappiness around anyway?

Ammamma

Ammamma. The word itself evokes memories for us. Her passing is the passing of a part of our childhood which we (my cousins and I) cherish. This is a piece for her. Ammamma is a telugu word to address mom's mom.  Ammamma lived in Chikkadpally, an area in the older part of Hyderabad, in one of those houses with multiple door entries, many windows in every room, and washroom that’s outside the house. Like Ammamma, the house was open, warm and welcoming. Anyone (whom we know ofcourse) could come inside and stay there as long as they wanted to. This was the 90s and perhaps due to the times we lived in, people were trusting of each other, children grew up in multiple households (grandparents’, aunts’, uncles’..). My Tomboyish Mother

Context: This poem is written for my mother who is a tomboy. As a child, it baffled me to see her demeanour versus the coy aunties I knew. But as I grew up, I realise that her presence, though strong, moulded my life in unique ways.  Poem: She is a marigold, an unlikely flower to be loved.
