Rang De - a movie that celebrates GMAT

A friend once said the Telugu movie, Shathamanam Bhavthi, belongs to the genre of sci-fi. It happens in a parallel universe. Who would not buy a ticket and go and visit their children? Or who would behave in such a manner? (Other details too)

But yes, Rang De re-emphasizes that same fact: that the movie belongs to the genre of sci-fi. It is like a watered version of Inception where the tuning top is GMAT (yes, that competitive exam) and the actors, Nithin, and a semblance of Keerty Suresh (let us call her Kitti), are " childhood friends".

Kitti is extremely affectionate, to the extent of being ridiculous. And Nithin is extremely ridiculous and is driven to the point of being affectionate in a caricaturish manner. As the story progresses, you can only wonder why is this movie all about exams and GMAT? But then, marriages itself, at times, are deals. So there is a hint of truth there.

However, some of the most awe-spiring scenes are: Kitti and a gang awaiting Nithin to fight a group of eve teasers, who stall an entire exhibition; Kitti donating Nithin money for a fraudulent attempt at GMAT, the Giant Madness Appreciation Test (pun intended) or the consultance of GMAT itself.

Though sprinkled with humour and despite the efforts of versatile actors, the movie becomes a hodge podge of Salaam Namaste. The students live a lavish life and at the drop of hat, celebrate or dance in various locales but call it Dubai. Perhaps, a cue from Vennella movie would be helpful here.

This story might work in another era where all nonsense was hidden away from Social Media but in the era of meme, trolls, questioning toxic masculinity, feminazis, capitalism being nudged by socialism (in small sections) and most importantly OTT platforms, the film makers should spend their money on anything else but stories like these.

Since Gulti people are heavily influenced by Tollywood, such movies indeed blow my mind. These movies are like the reservation seat, much to the fury of the meritorious candidate (here:struggling filmmakers) who deserve that seat.
