Divya Murarka and Lampshade Writers

Often the deepest friendships are formed when you are a child. But busting myths is the right of every individual. And, we have done it too. 

Met at a workshop, Divya Murarka, is a friend and a sister, now. Over the past two years I have learnt to understand her and myself, through her. 




She befriended me at a very different stage in my life. In 2019, I returned to India from the US to take up a job and pursue life again and that's when I met Divya at British Library. A starry-eyed woman with a manuscript written for parents and a hope that the MS document would turn into a book with a beautiful cover and a spine. It was February 2019. While I promised to edit it, I was still unsure. 

Her confidence stirred into me and I began editing on my way to work, every day. I found beauty, honesty, truth and more importantly, a purpose in her writing. While the book, like Hyderabadi Haleem, was taking its own sweet time, Divya and I met for Sphagetti, Coffee, chai and spoke about all things that bothered us too. After a while, it seemed less about us and more about each other. How we found solace on evenings, after work! 

But why am I telling all this? 

Divya nudged me to revert to my previous avocation: editing and publishing. 

I had tried Poetry in the Park and a multiple things and felt, our city has changed. But did it? Divya did not allow me to falter. Her confidence again built mine up. 

Of course, there were other pillars of support: Mom, Dad and my friends. 

But somehow this new friend brought a shade to the flickering light.

And, now I feel happy to share we will be launching Lampshade and her book next year. Our website will go live next year.

But in the meanwhile, we are introducing Lampshade Writers Circle. For every writer who wants to read and need that push to be a writer. Come over! Even meet Divya!

Ammamma

Ammamma. The word itself evokes memories for us. Her passing is the passing of a part of our childhood which we (my cousins and I) cherish. This is a piece for her. Ammamma is a telugu word to address mom's mom.  Ammamma lived in Chikkadpally, an area in the older part of Hyderabad, in one of those houses with multiple door entries, many windows in every room, and washroom that’s outside the house. Like Ammamma, the house was open, warm and welcoming. Anyone (whom we know ofcourse) could come inside and stay there as long as they wanted to. This was the 90s and perhaps due to the times we lived in, people were trusting of each other, children grew up in multiple households (grandparents’, aunts’, uncles’..). A chit-chat with Nita of Yunikee & Sign Medium that makes life accessible for the people of deaf community

Nita was born hearing to deaf parents. Living through the challenges of communicating on behalf of her parents with hearing people, After pursuing many things, eventually began working with deaf children. In 2019, she founded Yunikee & Sign Medium, with her husband, Chaithanya, and a friend, Rahul, to make life accessible for 60 million people in the deaf community in the country.
