Dear volunteer, No, thank you, let one talk to a therapist

Dear volunteer with a good ear,

The movie, Dear Zindagi directed by Gauri Shinde, that stars Shahrukh Khan and Alia Bhatt, and the more recent, Marriage Story directed by Noah Baumbach, that stars Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver, clearly underline the need for a therapist.

A therapist is a third person who offers a perspective that your biased loved ones cannot. While depression has to be taken seriously, so has to be therapy. You cannot move about saying "Please, talk to me. I will be your ears." Sorry, you're not a student of psychology. Sorry, you're don't champion mental health problems.

Skills such as empathy, counselling, trust are embedded in them through years of learning and training and they are professionally adept to handling people with anxiety and mental health issues.

If a friend or relative says, I have a stomach pain, you don't say, come I will diagnose it. I have given pudin hara to my friends earlier and they were fine.

Your listening skills are like pudin hara. Good for a short time but not long term.

You may have often calmed emotional typhoons in your house. And that's great, but please direct one to a therapist. You are a superhero if you direct someone to a therapist and it is not a taboo anymore. You or I cannot carry the burden of other's mental issues.

and dear person with mental issues,

In the film, Dear Zindagi, Dr. Jug says "We are often taught to maintain the peace of home. Smile, don't cry.. maintain the peace of home." Buy why? Why shouldn't we cry, show our anger? Why is the individual's worth measured by their resilience? Even the Hindu Gods (if you believe, only) are flawed characters. Why is this unnecessary need to reach an unknown apex and stay there?

Please make some noise.

Go.. shout .. yell.. and please seek professional help. You will like it.

yours sincerely,
a concerned person
