Happy F.R.I.E.N.D.S.H.I.P day!
Close your eyes.
Think of a couch.
Orange one.
Think of a coffee shop.
With mugs so big--they may as well have nipples on them.
Get the drift?
Central Perk.
This September marks 25 years of the first season of F.R.I.E.N.D.S, the iconic series with its many seasons that helped us through a rough summer, dry winter, and a moist monsoon.
Joey, Phoebe, Chandler, Ross, Rachel and Monica were not mere characters but euphemism of Food, Quirkiness, Sarcasm, Nerdiness, Fashion, and OCD.
Through them, we lived a life in The Village with the cute capuchin Marcel, the chick and the duck, the evil Ursula, the manipulative Emily, the eccentric agent, Estelle, macho Richard, silly Paolo among many others. (Of course, Monica and Ross's parents, Rachel's father, Phoebe's and Chandler's mother, and Joey's parents were adorable)
We saw their characters grow and lived an independent life with them. Our heart ached when they had a break up or when we knew that Chandler and Monica couldn't conceive. We saw Joey grow from a ladies man to a man who fell in love with the wrong woman and his exponential love for food. Ross's labyrinth of a journey from feeling betrayed by Carol Lesbian to stumbling to find a romantic mate. Monica's OCD that became annoying over time. Phoebe's tough girl nature that finally found a suitor in Crap Bag. Rachel who irriated us yet stole many hearts with her hairstyle, clothes, and her career arc. And the most memorable character: Chandler. His lines reverberate in memes and heads till date.
F.R.I.E.N.D.S cannot be captured in a mere 200-300 words. Thanks to the creators and writers, David Crane and Martha Kauffman, you can watch and rewatch bits of it and you can visualize the episodes. My favourite episodes were the one where they bet the apartment, where Ross and Phoebe argue about evolution, when Joey and Chandler get robbed, the one when everybody knows. Of course, every episode was a gem. But these pop out. I particularly enjoyed the last 20 seconds after the credits. And yes, The Rembrandts beats play as I write this (Tin-Tinda-tin-da-tin-tin).
Oh, they dont know that we know that they know--Pheobe.
Note: I tried to keep away from the famous lines on purpose.
