Lessons from Sankranti and Society
I blindly ape certain people. I ape my father or my mother or my brother or my sister or my friends.
This way: I learn about people and thus, about my roots.
Recently, I was having a discussion with the elders in our family on the importance of 'social structure' and its rigid forms in various parts of the world.
My background is into Teaching and Writing with a penchance for Real Estate. Thus, I began assisting my parents in their work since I was a kid.
Ammamma and I have been very close. Today, I was speaking with her about many things and she, in her deep tone, told me this: "Everyone has their own issues. As a woman, I have me needs and I need to maintain myself."
This clarity of thoughts made me think deeply about my own needs and I called my friend, Nirmal, and then my friend, Sharad. Largely, Sankranti is a festival of harvest and the importance of kites, planetary position etc and we discusssed about Societal structure and I learnt this:
1. Societies around the world follow a social structure - it could be rigid, elastic, fluid..
The Western System is more Time Bound. They love each other deeply. However, their love is about giving space and time. The "appointment culture" is because of their own busy schedules.
The Eastern System is more Emotion Bound. We love and have a sense of entitlement. Our love is more about "duties" and the "theology" we bring into our religion.
2. Our role
The Western System demands us to take care of ourself and then the society. It is a valid system and it makes sense in the corporate sector.
The Eastern System demands us to play roles of various kinds: Father, Mother, Brother, Sister..etc. Because we have lived in a rigid structure since centuries, it is difficult to even fathom the deep roots.
3. Our confusion
The Western System gives us freedom of thought and freedom of expression. It is a beautiful society which enables you to work and to think for your self.
The Eastern System gives you time to think about yourself, fix yourself and then enter the real world. It is Time Bound but with a reference to the planetory position.
Conclusion:
Both the West and East are symbolism of the way we conduct our lives in a week. Sunday, being the Sabbath Day, is the day of relaxation.
In the East, people get offended that Sunday is the start of the week. However, we must adjust. This is 'good adjusting'
I strongly beleive that if both the cultures focus on understanding the rigidity of our role models, we will lead a healthier life. Happiness is in our mind. However, other emotions are in the control of our senses.
Happy Festivals!
